5 Business Leadership Traits

Randy Joy @ 11:00 am

Ever stand at the front of the train?  You have a clear direction of where you are going, what’s ahead of you and what’s behind you.  Pity the other passengers who are there in the back of the train just sitting and being led.  The conducter, he is in the future, arriving at every destination first.  All others must merely be second-comers at all times, because they don’t stand at the front.

In your business, are you a passive follower going places others have steered towards way before you?  Or are you in the front car leading the entire market?

Here is how to lead:

1. Be aware of when you are leading or following
2. Always try to see when opportunities present themselves
3. If a door of opportunity presents itself, take it if it is consistent with your company’s values and vision
4. Differentiate, differentiate, differentiate
5. Become the artist of your industry

Leadership Responsibility – Ways to Reduce Crashes

Randy Joy @ 10:00 am

This week, in a massive pileup on a Japanese highway, eight Ferraris, three Mercedes, a Lamborghini, along with some other cars ended up totaled.  At fault, the lead car, a high-speed Ferrari whose driver made a mistake when changing lanes on a wet road.

As the CEO or leader of your organization, are you careful how you change directions?  Do you think of what pileup might happen behind you, if you don’t lead your team responsibly?

Any time you need to “change lanes” in your business, plot it out carefully.  Make a plan which shows what changes are to be made, the length of time to execute the changes without any mishaps, and the parties responsible for helping make the change.  This way, changes won’t make your business spin out of control.

Gain Business Clarity

Randy Joy @ 3:00 pm

I woke up this morning, and it was am extremely foggy day in New York.  So fogged up, in fact that I could hardly see the street down below.  I wonder how often my clients feel in a fog leading their companies, unable to see the road ahead.  I know when I led my companies, those murky days were not a pleasant feeling.

This is why I took time each week to remove myself from the day-to-day activities of my company to realign myself with the true purpose of the company; long term vision; and the strategic goals ahead of me to perform even during a foggy day.

Do you take time each week to realign yourself and bring clarity to your company?

Your Business Future

Randy Joy @ 10:00 am

It took Ray Croc, founder of McDonalds, many years and many businesses to find a way to make his billions of dollars eventually, at age 52, through selling hamburgers.  He failed numerous times before.  However, his secret to success was that he kept picking himself up and trying again.  Don’t let the past determine your future.

I have made many mistakes too.  Yet, with persistence and determination I pick myself up. This New Year commit to a one hundred percent commitment to reach your vision and persist no matter what.

Transcend Limitations

Randy Joy @ 10:00 am

Gymnasts, ballerinas, contortionists, they know something every entrepreneur ought to know.  Limits are there just so we can transcend them.  That pole over there, its there just to get us to vault over it.

The first step in transcendentalism is to acknowledge where you are now, a self awareness of what you have been able to do thus far.  Then, create something new that was not there before, a new venture, a new office, a new product line, by pushing past where you are now.  Go beyond yesterday’s limitations.

To do so, apply enormous will, persistence and imagination.  Focus, plan, then vault over obstacles and limitations.

The Fight

Randy Joy @ 10:00 am

It was all about a big, cardboard box.  The two young children were playing with it when the question arose, whose was it.  Forgotten was play and the fight began.  ”It’s mine.”  “No, mine“.   Luckily, their mother was in relax mode that day, and she wisely stayed an objective observer.  “You do realize you’re fighting over a cardboard box, right?” she asked.

The box was not the issue at this point, it was about winning the fight, which is why the fighting continued.  So the mother intelligently distracted her children, “Dinner time.”   She helped each child disconnect from the stakes and get on with life, off to the dinner table.

Don’t think we all grow up.  Even in the business world, within your company, you might have to play the part of the intelligent interloper betwixt fighting parties, and you must stay the objective outsider.

The next time you see your employees fighting over a petty thing remember to point out how meaningless the stakes are in the fight.  Yet, true learning will come when they too are relaxed and calm and can see the pettiness in the realm of the big picture.  At the moment, in the heat of the argument, try to distract and refocus your team.

Remember it’s not about who is right, but about doing what’s right with wisdom.

40 Days for True Change

Randy Joy @ 9:00 am

Consistent change takes 40 days. If you can persevere for 40 days in one small change it becomes part of routine or habit.  All it takes is a commitment and will to do it no matter what.  You will change your reality.  What will you be committing to for the next 40 days?

Unity

Randy Joy @ 9:00 am

A team together can accomplish extraordinary things when everyone is working toward the same mission and vision.  Employees must know the mission and vision, but……every member must carry the weight of their role and job.

Army leaders know this really well.  Troops are trained and drilled to make sure that someone mans all positions.  “Aye, aye, sir, I know my job and know my task”, is something that is necessary for seamless operations.  Teamwork doesn’t mean everyone is doing the same task; it is everyone knowing their place within the team structure.

The first step the team takes is maintaining progress already made.  The next step is then working toward new goals and growth.
